SILVER: 1987 to 2012 - Wangaratta Art Gallery celebrating 25 years

March 31 to May 20, 2012

As the most reflective substance known to humans and much used in the production of mirrors, silver provides us with a striking symbol to enable the community to reflect on the history of the gallery since its inception in 1987 and to develop new dreams and aspirations for its future.

The specially developed Silver exhibition explores the use of silver in contemporary visual and decorative arts. Artworks are drawn from private and public collections including the National Gallery of Victoria and the National Gallery of Australia. Materials are wide ranging including ceramics, glass, painting, sculpture, textiles, jewellery and hollow ware.

“This important exhibition is the celebratory highlight of the Gallery’s Silver Jubilee year. It promises to be an outstanding exhibition that includes significant works of art that are beautiful, engaging and modern and sometimes challenging,” gallery director Dianne Mangan said.

Artists include: Brook Andrew, Robert Baines, George Baldessin, Julie Blyfield, Godwin Bradbeer, Richard Byrnes, Susan Cohn, Simon Cottrell, Stuart Devlin, Jan Donaldson, Michael Doolan, William Eicholtz, Pauline Fraser, Mandy Gunn, Marian Hosking, Inge King, Helge Larsen/Darani Lewers Bea Maddock, Lorraine Connelly-Northey, Carlier Makigawa, Dani Marti, Marc Newson, Rosslynd Piggott, Fleur Rendell, Louise Rippert, Caroline Rothwell, Mark Selkrig, Mitsuo Shoji, Sally Smart, Stelarc, Kim Westcott and Liz Williamson.
